Remember the 1980 movie Xanadu? It starred Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck and Gene Kelly.
In the film, the mysterious Kira (Olivia Newton-John) appears to assist and inspire a young artist, Sonny Malone (Michael Beck). When she helps him meet up with the rich Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly), the two join up together to create an artistic and business success – a unique club called “Xanadu.”
Now the SFT Academy is bringing this to the stage and it’s full of laughter, music… and roller-skating. Yes, folks, this is a roller-skating musical and it is more fun than you can imagine. Greek goddesses, chalk art – this show has everything. And it’s not just fun and funny; it’s laugh out loud funny! The hero has half a brain and a heart of gold and needs all the help the Muses can give him.
The Stirling Festival Theatre Academy is the new name for the Young Company, which takes kids from across the area and gives them professional coaching in acting, dancing, singing and all the other skills involved in putting a show on stage. They don’t pay a penny for the coaching – it is part of the Theatre’s community outreach. And when the coaching is all done they put on a show whose quality will match any professional production.
Did you see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Footloose, Willy Wonka or any of the other recent Young Company Productions? Then you know what I’m talking about. And if you haven’t seen those shows, give yourself a treat and head to the Stirling Festival Theatre; you won’t believe how talented these kids are.
The show is on from March 29 till April 9 and tickets cost from $15 for youth and from $24 for members (plus applicable taxes and fees). You can book online at www.stirlingfestivaltheatre.com or call our Box Bffice at 613-395-2100. Or if you’re in town, pop in to our Box Office to purchase your tickets in person.
It’s going to be a great show. Make sure you don’t miss it.
